Varsity Sports Centre at Varsity Central Park in Varsity Lakes required a large shade solution to cover an outdoor basketball court — providing players and spectators with meaningful UV protection and allowing the court to remain comfortably usable throughout Queensland’s summer months and rainy season.
Vector Shade designed and installed a basketball court barrel vault — a large, sweeping shade sail structure that spans the full length and width of the court using a barrel-vault form. The sail is fabricated from Monotec 370, a high-quality, UV-stabilised shade cloth fabric, while the supporting steel frame is hot dip galvanised for long-term corrosion resistance. This configuration is one of Vector Shade’s proven approaches for commercial shade sails over sports courts, delivering excellent coverage without the complexity of a permanent enclosed structure.
The aerial installation image shows the barrel-vault structure mid-installation with a crane on site — the scale of the sail and the precision required to tension it correctly across the court are both apparent. Once complete, the dark shade cloth creates a clearly defined, fully shaded court environment where players can train and compete without direct sun exposure, regardless of the time of day.
