Varsity College on the Gold Coast required an outdoor covered area of substantial scale — a space large enough to serve as a genuine all-weather hub for student activity on what is a large, well-equipped campus. The solution needed to be structurally impressive, fully waterproof, and built to handle Queensland’s demanding climate over the long term.

Vector Shade designed and built a custom engineered VORTEX structure — one of Vector Shade’s signature large-span waterproof PVC canopy designs. The VORTEX uses a series of sweeping arched steel frames to create a dramatic barrel-vault interior space, with the canopy panels of Ferrari 702S2 fabric drawn taut between the arches to form a continuous, fully weatherproof ceiling. The steel framework is finished in a 3 Coat Dulux Weather Max System, providing a premium paint finish with outstanding long-term durability. The result is a true landmark commercial shade structure that anchors the school’s outdoor precinct.

The hero image, taken from inside the VORTEX, captures the scale of the structure — the sequence of bold arched steel ribs and pale fabric panels stretching across the space, with the school buildings and sports fields visible beyond. From the air, the VORTEX forms a striking white roof shape that stands out against the surrounding rooflines. Beneath it, students have access to a vast, fully covered outdoor area that can be used year-round for sport, assemblies, and outdoor learning.

The VORTEX is one of Vector Shade’s most impressive structural offerings for schools and large commercial sites. To find out whether it’s right for your project, contact our team today.
