St Joseph’s College at Spring Hill in Brisbane required shade coverage for a beautifully landscaped central courtyard — a key outdoor space used by students for recreation and relaxation between classes. The challenge was to provide generous shade over a curved, organically shaped garden area while working harmoniously with the detailed landscaping already in place.

Vector Shade installed a set of hyper free-formed shade sails attached to engineered steel posts — a design approach that allows the sails to take on dramatic, sweeping three-dimensional forms rather than flat planes. The sails use a combination of Rainbow Shade Extreme 32 and Serge Ferrari 502S2 fabrics, giving a mix of texture and UV protection performance. The steel posts are hot dip galvanised for long-term corrosion resistance. These high-quality materials and the custom free-form geometry are characteristic of Vector Shade’s approach to commercial shade sails for prestige school environments.

The result is a visually striking courtyard shade installation that feels integrated into the landscape rather than imposed on it. The large sail sweeps across the garden beds, paved pathways, and planting zones, casting wide areas of shade across the courtyard without overwhelming the carefully designed outdoor space beneath. It’s a solution that balances function with aesthetics in equal measure.
