St Augustine’s College at Augustine Heights required a large covered outdoor area to provide students with a fully protected recreation and gathering space between their existing school buildings. The challenge was to deliver a structure with significant span and visual presence without disrupting the surrounding architecture or the colourful playground below.

Vector Shade designed and installed an engineered steel structure with a tensioned waterproof PVC canopy that arcs gracefully over the courtyard space. The canopy fabric is Serge Ferrari 702S2, carrying a 15-year warranty, while the steel is coated in Dulux Triplex Weather Max — a premium exterior paint system known for its durability in Queensland’s demanding climate. The result is a true commercial shade structure built to handle decades of daily use with minimal maintenance.

The aerial image shows the sweeping, barrel-vaulted profile of the canopy as it sits between the school’s multi-storey buildings, creating a defined outdoor zone that feels both sheltered and open. The colourful playground markings below remain vibrant and usable year-round, protected from the direct sun and rain that would otherwise limit access during Queensland’s wet season and summer months.

This project highlights Vector Shade’s expertise in delivering large-format school shade structures that are both functional and architecturally considered. If your school or institution is planning a similar outdoor covered space, contact our team to discuss your requirements.
