Sophia College in Plainland, Queensland, required a large-scale covered outdoor learning area (COLA) that could protect students year-round while complementing the school’s existing architecture. The structure needed to span a significant area, provide full weather protection, and meet the rigorous safety and durability requirements expected of a permanent educational facility.
Vector Shade designed and installed an engineered steel structure with a tensioned waterproof PVC canopy — a solution that combines the permanence of a commercial shade structure with the clean aesthetic of a sweeping, curved roof line. The canopy fabric is Serge Ferrari 702S2, carrying a 15-year warranty, while the steel framework is finished in QUAD Pro Marine Grade Paint with a matching 15-year warranty — ensuring the structure remains low-maintenance and visually sharp for decades.
Viewed from above, the COLA’s curved PVC canopy creates a striking architectural form that integrates naturally with the school’s rooflines. The structure delivers a fully covered, open-air space that students and staff can use in all weather conditions — whether for outdoor classes, assemblies, or recreation. The light-coloured canopy also helps manage heat, keeping the area comfortable even during Queensland’s warmer months.
This project reflects Vector Shade’s expertise in designing purpose-built school shade solutions that balance function, durability, and design. If you’re planning a COLA or outdoor learning space for your school or institution, contact our team to discuss your requirements.
