The 19th Shopping Centre car park on the Gold Coast presented a familiar challenge for retail property managers: an open-air car park with no overhead protection, exposed to the harsh Queensland sun for most of the day. Vector Shade Structures was engaged to design and install a large-scale engineered shade solution to improve the comfort and appeal of the carpark for shoppers.

The completed installation features a series of parallel hypar shade sails spanning the full length of the car park bays. Each structure is built on a heavy-duty engineered steel framework — supplied by others and installed to structural specifications — with Vector supplying and installing the mesh canopy system. The fabric chosen was Monotec 370, a premium commercial-grade woven shade cloth backed by a 15-year warranty. The warm sand tone of the fabric sits naturally against the open sky and complements the retail centre environment.

Aerial photography of the finished project shows just how comprehensively the car park bays are covered, with the sails casting strong, defined shadows across vehicle rooftops throughout the day. At ground level, there’s generous clearance beneath the canopies, keeping the space feeling open while fully protecting parked vehicles and pedestrians from direct sun exposure.

The stainless steel connection hardware and post fittings visible in the detail photography reflect the standard of engineering and finish that Vector Shade Structures brings to every commercial project — built to handle the wind, UV and load demands of a Gold Coast coastal environment.
