## Custom netball court shade structures

**VECTOR Shade Structures design and construct netball court covers that help games, training and carnivals continue in heat and rain.**

Outdoor netball runs on the weather. Storms wash out fixtures, wet courts get slippery and summer heat cuts sessions short. A good cover makes your courts playable, cooler and safer all year.

Each structure is custom-engineered for Australian conditions. Below, we’ve set out what Netball Australia’s guidelines for covered courts mean for your project.

## The difference between VECTOR shade structures and other shade structures

Netball has its own guidelines for covered courts. Here’s what we bring to every court cover.

## Why cover a netball court?

**– Fewer washouts**
Rain and extreme heat halt play. A waterproof cover helps keep fixtures, training and carnivals on schedule.

**– Cooler courts**
Shade brings surface temperatures down, so players and umpires stay more comfortable in summer.

**– Sun-smart for every age**
Shade protects players, umpires, coaches and parents from UV. This is important for junior programs during the day.

**– Longer surface life**
Less sun and rain means less fading, cracking and resurfacing of acrylic courts.

**– More use from the same courts**
With lighting, covered courts can host night comps, holiday programs and community events in all weather.

**– Lower cost than an indoor stadium**
A cover allows year-round play for a lower capital cost than building indoors.

**Netball Australia’s fact sheet also lists fewer cancellations, sun safety and longer court life as key benefits of covering outdoor courts.**

## Designing to Netball Australia guidelines

Netball Australia has a [fact sheet on court covers and airhalls](https://netball.com.au/sites/netballnation/files/2026-08/NA%20Court%20Covers%20and%20Airhalls%20Fact%20Sheet%202026.pdf) for schools, councils and project managers. It was last updated in August 2026. Here are the key points to plan for.

### 7.5m minimum clearance

The lowest point of the structure, including lights and fittings, should be at least 7.5m above the court. This is to be observed throughout the run-off area and the principal play area.

### Posts that are not in the run-off zone

Support posts must sit outside the 3.05m run-off and umpire zone. For multi-court layouts, the fact sheet shows a minimum of 3.65m between courts, plus space for players, officials and spectators to move around.

### The correct lighting levels

Netball Australia suggests 100 lux for training and 200 lux for competition on covered courts. It states that 500 lux gives a noticeably better result, especially on dull days. It also notes that bolted light fittings cut the risk of damage during use.

### Drainage and gutters

A roof this size moves a lot of water, and existing drains may not cope. Plan gutters, downpipes and stormwater to keep water off the court. Roof access may also be needed for gutter cleaning.

### Access for maintenance

Entry points must be large enough for scissor lifts and maintenance vehicles for lighting and roof maintenance.

### Bird proofing

Netball Australia suggests enclosing the beams and purlins so birds can’t roost above the court and leave droppings on the surface.

### Noise and neighbours

On courts near houses, insulation or noise barriers can help reduce noise for nearby homes.

### League equalisation

In some home-and-away competitions, the standard of the venues must be equal or close to equal. Discuss with your league or state member organisation early in planning.

**Covered outdoor courts are appropriate for outdoor competitions, training and carnivals. They aren’t a substitute for indoor competition on sprung timber floors. Please check with your state netball body.**

## Types of netball court covers

All designed to meet Australian standards for strength and safety.

![Close-up of green shade fabric and a steel edge clamp on a tensile court canopy](https://vectorshade.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Vector-Court-Shade.jpg)

### Tensile membrane roofs

Light, strong and striking. Waterproof PVC membranes filter natural light without glare, over one court or several.

### Steel roof structures

Built for maximum durability at busy council and public facilities.

## Frequently asked questions about netball court covers

### How much does a netball court cover cost?

Each cover is custom designed and the cost will vary depending on the number of courts, the type of structure (shade fabric, waterproof membrane or steel roof), site and wind conditions, and extras such as lighting, gutters and seating. Get a free quote or read our guide to [tensile vs hard roof structures](https://vectorshade.com.au/tensile-vs-hard-roof-structures-whats-the-difference/) to understand the impact of structure type on cost.

### How high does a netball court cover need to be?

Netball Australia recommends that the lowest point of the structure, including lights and fittings, be at least 7.5m above the court. This height applies throughout the run-off area and the principal play area.

### Is it possible to cover an existing netball court?

Yes. Posts and footings are placed around the court layout and run-off areas to keep the playing surface intact. A site assessment is carried out before construction to check ground conditions, access and the best structure for your court.

### Are you able to cover more than one court?

Yes. We cover single courts and multiple courts. Our cover at Lords Lutheran Ormeau Rivers District School spans a double court.

### Is it possible to play netball in the rain with a netball court cover?

Yes, if it has a waterproof membrane or steel roof, with gutters to carry runoff away from the court. Standard shade fabric blocks UV but allows rain to pass through. On exposed sites, a fully enclosed design adds protection from wind-driven rain.

### Do you need council approval to cover a netball court?

Almost always. A cover over a full netball court is well beyond the size limits for exempt shade structures. The process varies from state to state, so check out our [council approval in Queensland](https://vectorshade.com.au/do-you-need-council-approval-for-shade-structures-in-queensland/) and [council approval in NSW](https://vectorshade.com.au/do-you-need-council-approval-for-shade-structures-in-nsw/) guides. As part of our turnkey service, VECTOR manages approvals.

### Are official competitions allowed on covered courts?

Covered outdoor courts are appropriate for outdoor competitions, training and carnivals. They aren’t a substitute for indoor competition on sprung timber. Some home-and-away leagues also have equalisation rules, so please check with your league or state netball body early.

### Are you able to assist with grant-funded projects?

Yes. We’ve helped schools and councils secure grants and meet building requirements.
